ordinarily a disconcerting subject line in an email but this time it made me smile. I mentioned last week I did a workshop with some amazing artists at Gallery 1313 , and yesterday received an email from one of them.

the Oft-Mentioned Survey and What Blogs Do You Follow?

Was asked the other day at coffee which blogs I follow, thought it was a good question so here are some that I do indeed check in with regularly. Some – not all. You have a life.

Seth’s Blog – Seth Godin has written thirteen books that have been translated into more than thirty languages. Every one has been a bestseller. He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership and most of all, changing everything.

Stepcase Lifehack –  a daily digest on productivity and life improvement

Freakonomics –  Steven D. Levitt is an economist. Stephen J. Dubner is a writer. They co-authored Freakonomics, a book about cheating teachers, bizarre baby names, self-dealing Realtors, and crack-selling mama’s boys. They figured it would sell about 80 copies. Instead, it has sold 4 million, in 35 languages.

Why This e- flyer/poster is Awesome

we got the poster and postcard design for Expect Theatre’s AWAKE today – it’s designed by Randal Boutilier of 12thirteen design.  The posters will be 12 X 18 and the postcards will be postcard sized. Before I begin, you should know that the Fringe is a very poster-y event – everyone has posters, I’d venture to say it’s one type of festival where you MUST have them, and they MUST stand out from the crowd.So this isn’t a “to poster or not to poster?” blog post. We’re postering and this is what we’re working with.

Here’s the online version – the ones that’s emailed to all your friends and family.

There are many reasons I think this piece is awesome.

  • Fantastic image.  Absolutely gorgeous and completely relevant to the production.
  • Fantastic logo – which I’ve been using to make a lot of connected marketing collateral – the “other stuff”. I’ll show those to you at a later date. Also completely relevant to the production when you take a closer look at the individual cutout images in the wing.
  • The play description is compelling – it tells you exactly what you are in for without giving it away, so to speak. Excellent tagline as well – “This Is Real” is straightforward and compelling. And true – it lives with the play description.
  • For a poster with this much information, it’s still clean. The pertinent information is readily visible. The funders are credited without the dreaded “logo soup” effect. Even if it’s sent to you as ‘small’ – the big stuff is clear; Title, Image, Dates, Fringe. It pulls you in for a closer look. This will translate easily to other collateral including ads, web banners, colour changes, black and white, spot colour, you name it. It’s a marketer’s dream. Why?
  • Because you could crop up this poster for virtually anything, and even though that means some information will go missing, the main stuff is still there – you’d still know how to get a ticket to the show. It’s a beautifully put together puzzle of information, and each piece gives you a bit more knowledge about the production. Each section stands alone, yet is part of the bigger picture.And finally:
  • Everyone who has worked on this show is on here. Many posters/flyers credit  the performers, and sometimes the designers, and many don’t credit anyone at all. This piece shows the average person just how many people it takes to make theatre ‘go’. It’s not for ego, it’s the fact that very talented people who are very good at what they do worked on this. It recognizes the truly collaborative nature of the work that we do. It instills a sense of ownership and pride in the work – your name is literally on it. It’s also nice as a bigger picture look at our industry for those reasons.

Congrats to 12thirteen and Expect. Gorgeous stuff.

Data, Audiences, and my Thoughts on Margie

Excellent newsletter in my inbox today from my friends at Creative Trust on the art of data collection and what the heck to do with it. I’m a data and stats geek myself, so naturally I had to repost.

We all know that collecting data – about our audiences, our donors, our neighbourhood and partners – serves no purpose unless we know how to find it and what to do with it.

We realized, early in our Audiences Project, that our members’ outdated systems and databases were holding them back from applying what they learned. While our companies understood the benefits of  segmenting their lists, tracking buying preferences and linking donation history to ticket buying history, many of their systems made such practices impossible.

Little bit of Facebook love for some of my favourite people – Expect Theatre, Theatre 20 and Mighty Brave – as I mentioned in a previous post with the Facebook group phasing and archiving and yadda yadda everyone’s have to make new groups.  If we want to run awesome contests, share info and communicate, we need people, so feel free to wander over and give it a like.


Some folks have asked me why I haven’t said anything about the ridiculous “interview” of modern dancer Margie Gillis on Sun TV. I will not link to the interview or their website.  I will not add to the Sun’s coffers by doing so. I will say I’ve never seen such a disgraceful piece of alleged journalism.  I sincerely think it would be interesting to see how Miss Erickson would have spoken to someone of Margie`s calibre in the auto industry, or science, or R&D, all of which receive grants equal to if not probably more than Margie and many others dream of. Miss Erickson knew nothing about the subject matter, readily admitted it and proceeded to bulldoze her way through. So instead I will link to Louis Laberge-Cote’s stunning rebuttal, published in the Calgary Beacon, and making the internet rounds as of late..

Something interesting to note – my blog posts create automatic links to items that it has ‘heard of’. I’d like to point out  – it’s heard of Margie Gillis, Laureate of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards. It’s never heard of Krista Erikson.

Have You Checked Out Today’s Google Doodle?

Imagine – Google is the search engine. According to Search Engine Watch, 91 million people a DAY use Google.

So today 91 million people will see what I think is a very cool animated Google Doodle, and hopefully click on it to see what it’s about, and learn a little about someone “whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Stravinsky had on music, Picasso had on the visual arts, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture.” (source: wikipedia)

What a nice surprise and bonus/boost for arts and culture for a Wednesday.
